CLEANINGS

Why do I need dental cleanings?

Dental cleanings, also known as teeth cleanings or professional dental cleanings, are an important part of maintaining good oral health. Here are a few reasons why dental cleanings are necessary:

  1. Preventing cavities and gum disease: Regular dental cleanings can remove plaque and tartar buildup, which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease if left untreated.
  2. Maintaining good oral hygiene: Cleanings help to remove surface stains and other buildup that can cause bad breath and affect the appearance of your teeth.
  3. Early detection of oral health issues: During a cleaning, your dentist can check for signs of oral health problems, such as gum disease, cavities, and oral cancer, and take appropriate action to treat these issues in the early stages.
  4. Preventing more serious and expensive dental problems: Regular dental cleanings can help prevent more serious dental problems from developing, such as gum disease, cavities, and tooth loss, which can be more expensive to treat in the long run.

The frequency of dental cleanings is based on your individual needs and can range from once every six months to once every year. Your dentist will be able to recommend the right schedule for you based on your oral health and history.

deep cleaning / Scaling and root planing (SRP)

Dental deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing, is a type of professional dental cleaning that is used to treat gum disease. It involves the removal of plaque and tartar buildup, particularly below the gum line, to help reduce inflammation and improve the health of the gums.

During a deep cleaning, the dentist or dental hygienist will use special instruments to remove plaque and tartar from the teeth and roots, and smooth out rough spots on the roots that can trap bacteria and cause infection. This helps to reduce inflammation and promote healthy gum tissue.

Deep cleanings are typically recommended for individuals who have gum disease, a condition in which the gums become infected and begin to pull away from the teeth. The procedure is typically done in multiple appointments, and may be accompanied by local anesthesia or sedation to help manage any discomfort.

It is important to keep in mind that while deep cleanings can be effective in treating gum disease, they are not a cure. Good oral hygiene practices and regular dental cleanings are still important to maintain gum health and prevent the recurrence of gum disease.

IMPLANTS

What are Implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots made of titanium or other biocompatible materials, which are surgically anchored into the jawbone to support a replacement tooth or bridge. They provide a stable base for the crown or bridge, which is custom-made to match the color and shape of the surrounding teeth. The result is a long-lasting, natural-looking tooth replacement option.

How is the process?

The dental implant process typically involves the following steps:

  1. Consultation and planning: During an initial consultation, the dentist will examine your mouth and take X-rays to determine if dental implants are the right option for you and to plan the placement of the implants.
  2. Preparation and placement of the implant: The implant is surgically placed into the jawbone, and the area is closed with sutures.
  3. Healing period: Over the next several months, the implant and jawbone fuse together through a process called osseointegration. This can take several months.
  4. Attaching the abutment: Once the implant has fully integrated with the jawbone, a small metal post called an abutment is attached to the implant.
  5. Placement of the crown or bridge: The dentist will take impressions of the teeth and make a custom crown or bridge, which is then attached to the abutment.

The entire process usually takes several months from start to finish, but can vary based on the individual case. The dental implant process may require multiple visits to the dentist.

What is the cost?

The cost of dental implants can vary widely depending on several factors, including the number of implants needed, the type of implant and restoration used, the location of the dental practice, and the experience and qualifications of the dentist. On average, the cost of a single dental implant can range from $1,500 to $6,000 or more in the United States, with the average cost being around $3,000 to $4,500 per implant.

Keep in mind that this is just an average and the actual cost for your specific case may be higher or lower. Additionally, some dental insurance plans may partially cover the cost of dental implants, so it's always best to check with your insurance provider to see what is covered.

VENEERS

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin shells of tooth-colored materials, such as porcelain or composite resin, that are custom-made to fit over the front surface of a tooth to improve its appearance. They are often used to correct cosmetic dental issues, such as stained, chipped, misshapen, or misaligned teeth.

The veneers are bonded to the front of the teeth with a special dental adhesive, and can be made to match the color and shape of surrounding teeth to create a natural-looking, uniform smile. Veneers are typically placed on the upper front teeth, but can also be used on lower teeth if needed.

The veneer placement process typically requires two or three visits to the dentist, and may involve the removal of a small amount of tooth structure to make room for the veneer. Once placed, veneers are durable and can last for many years with proper care and maintenance.

Veneers are a popular cosmetic dentistry option because they provide a quick and effective solution for improving the appearance of teeth, and can be an alternative to more extensive and invasive dental procedures, such as braces or crowns.

DENTURES

What kind of denture is right for me?

Dentures are removable artificial teeth that are used to replace missing teeth. There are two main types of dentures: complete dentures and partial dentures.

  1. Complete dentures: Also known as full dentures, complete dentures are used to replace all of the natural teeth in an arch (either the upper or lower jaw). They are typically made of acrylic resin or porcelain, and are designed to fit snugly over the gums, providing support for the cheeks and lips and improving the ability to chew and speak.
  2. Partial dentures: Partial dentures are used to replace one or more missing teeth in a dental arch. They are designed to fit into the remaining natural teeth and gums, and are held in place with metal clasps or other attachment mechanisms. Partial dentures can be made of plastic, acrylic, or a combination of materials, and are often used as a more affordable alternative to dental bridges or dental implants.

There are also several different types of denture materials and designs, including:

  • Conventional dentures: The most common type of denture, conventional dentures are designed to fit the mouth after the remaining natural teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has fully healed (typically after several months).
  • Immediate dentures: Immediate dentures are designed to be inserted immediately after the remaining natural teeth are removed, so that the patient does not have to go without teeth during the healing period.
  • Overdentures: Overdentures are dentures that fit over and around dental implants, providing additional stability and support for the denture.
  • Hybrid dentures: Hybrid dentures are a combination of a denture and a dental bridge, and are used to replace multiple missing teeth in a dental arch.

It is important to discuss your options with your dentist to determine the best type of denture for your specific needs and situation.

CROWNS & BRIDGES

What are crowns and bridges?

A dental crown is a type of dental restoration that fits over the top of a damaged or decayed tooth to improve its appearance and strength. Crowns can be made of a variety of materials, including porcelain, ceramic, metal (such as gold or silver alloys), or a combination of materials, and are custom-made to fit the shape and color of the patient's natural teeth.

Dental bridges are similar to crowns, but are used to replace one or more missing teeth. Bridges consist of one or more artificial teeth, called pontics, that are attached to one or more crowns. The crowns are placed over the remaining natural teeth on either side of the gap, and serve as anchors for the bridge.

Both dental crowns and bridges are typically placed over two or more dental visits. During the first visit, the dentist prepares the tooth or teeth by removing any damaged or decayed areas, and takes impressions of the teeth to be used to create the custom-fit crowns or bridge. During the second visit, the crowns or bridge are placed and adjusted as needed to ensure a proper fit and comfort.

Both dental crowns and bridges are durable and long-lasting, and can help to improve the appearance and function of the teeth. However, it is important to maintain good oral hygiene practices and attend regular dental check-ups to ensure the long-term success of these restorations.
